Royal Society of Chemistry congratulates 2013 Nobel Peace Prize laureate

The Royal Society of Chemistry offers its warmest congratulations to Ambassador Ahmet Üzümcü and his colleagues at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on their being awarded the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

"The OPCW has for many years been working with chemical scientists across the globe to eradicate chemical weapons, and we feel the Nobel Peace Prize is deserved recognition of their valuable mission and achievements," said Dr Robert Parker, the Royal Society of Chemistry's chief executive officer.

"We were honoured to host the Ambassador at the Chemistry Centre in Burlington House in 2011, the International Year of Chemistry, when he visited the UK to highlight the work of the OPCW.

"And we have worked together for the past few years, through our Pan Africa Chemistry Network, by supporting  training in analytical techniques for African scientists. The training builds capacity for high-quality data collection and analysis that is vital for good policy decision-making.

"We're proud that many chemical scientists around the world are contributing to their important work of treating, preventing and destroying the horrific legacy of chemical weapons."
