Knowing yourself

Introduction

Online assessment - can be taken anytime.

Overview

This course forms part of the RSC Essential Skills Management scheme.

Not all learning takes place in the classroom or seminar. Individuals learn by stepping back from the rush of day to day activity and reflecting thoughtfully on themselves, their capabilities and their experiences. This process allows you to use your own experiences as a learning opportunity; to perceive familiar things in new and different ways and to grasp the real priorities.

Objectives

To enable you to:

  • Develop a language to reflect on your own personal characteristics and capabilities
  • Identify the implications of these characteristics and capabilities for your work
  • Develop sensitivity to the individual differences of others, to better understand other people and their responses

Key features

Completion of four online psychometric assessments:

  • Personality: untimed questionnaire that takes about 15 minutes. The 5 factor personality analysis gives an insight into your personality traits and likely behaviour in a job role when working alone or in a team with others. It also indicates those situations that you are likely to find it easy to cope with and those where you may experience more difficulty.

  • Analytic Skills Test  - timed test (15 minutes): This test measures the ability to pick up important key messages and to derive a valid conclusion from a set of reasons. Your performance in these skills can be improved by training.

  • General Reasoning Ability - timed test (15 minutes): This test assesses your ability to understand and manipulate complex ideas verbally, numerically and spatially. These general reasoning abilities are indicative of the ease with which you will learn new skills and deal with complex concepts.

  • Personal Enterprise Profile - untimed questionnaire, approximately 10 minutes: The questionnaire identifies the values and attitudes which you believe are important in developing a business. Depending on the attitudes selected you will be characterised as strongly Entrepreneurial, an Enterpriser, a Corporate developer or a Professional/Technical expert.

Telephone discussion
You will receive a written report delivered electronically and can then telephone for further discussion. The telephone session with one of our senior psychologists will focus on the implications of the report for your career direction and immediate development needs. You will be encouraged to reflect on these implications, to step back and consider yourself when measured against other people and to learn and change appropriate aspects of your approach to work as a result of the experience.

Benefits to you and to your organisation

  • A clear awareness of your own strengths and how you can best contribute to your organisation.
  • Identification of your own weaknesses and development needs so that you can direct and focus your own learning.
  • An understanding of the infinite variety of individual differences and so more flexibility in working with and managing others.
