This talk focuses on a unique sensing system based on the modification of biomembrane organisation and fluidity through the interaction with biologically active compounds and/or particles. The very unique idea for this sensing system was developed some years ago and the fundamental and interesting basis of the scientific mechanism will be described. More recently the sensing mechanism has been transferred to a silicon chip to produce a device which can detect biomembrane active compounds and/or particles in aqueous matrices. This device can be used in an on-line and automated configuration. The talk summarises how a very interesting and scientifically imaginative idea can be transferred to a highly functional and novel analytical instrument.
