Bio-Organic Group

The group acts to promote Bio-Organic chemistry principally by organising meetings and is run by a committee consisting of a chairman, a secretary, the treasurer and six members.

Bio-Organic Chemistry can be defined as the application of chemical principles and techniques to solve biological problems.

It encompasses:

  • the synthesis of natural products and other biologically active or medicinal compounds
  • the use of micro-organisms or enzymes as synthetic reagents (biotransformations)
  • the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and the elucidation of biological reaction mechanisms.

The development of gene manipulation technology and genomic information provides enormous opportunities for the developments in Bio-Organic Chemistry.

Meetings

The main meetings run by the group are held at Firbush in alternate years in September and an annual one day postgraduate symposium in late December, or early January.

Other meetings are held on subjects of topical interest as the need arises. Suggestions for meetings are welcomed, particularly joint meetings with other RSC groups or external organisations.

The annual general meeting is held at the postgraduate symposium and is usually followed by a committee meeting.
