This page contains help with Index Terms and Bibliographic Data.

An implied "AND" connects the text when you make entries in multiple boxes.

Index Terms

Analytical Abstracts uses a unique indexing system. Three sets of index terms are defined for every abstract: ANALYTE, MATRIX  and TECHNIQUE. Further assistance on each index term is accessed through the question mark icons: Question Mark on the "Advanced Search" page.

  • Controlled lists of index terms for MATRIX and TECHNIQUE are provided via the arrow icon: Arrow
  • The lists of index terms may be expanded by clicking on the parent terms.
  • Simply clicking on the index terms transfers them to your search criteria.

Search terms are checked against a thesaurus containing tens of thousands of records. Your search results will also include records containing relevant synonyms or acronyms.

Bibliographic Data

To search TITLE, enter words of your choice into the text box provided. The database will perform your search across all abstracts in the database.

Use Boolean operators such as AND, OR and NOT to define your search.

The wildcard symbol (*) may also be used. For example, entering Biolog* will retrieve records which include the word "biology", "biological" and "biologically".

AUTHOR NAMES must be searched in the following format:

  • Linton C.l.
  • Wan-Daud W.R.
  • Han S.-K.
The use of a wildcard (*) is recommended in Author Name searching. Bibliographic information does not always include middle initials:
  • Linton C.*
  • Linton*

A full list of available Journal Names is available to search via the arrow icon: Arrow alongside the text entry box.

A "predictive" assistant is also provided. As you type the name in the text entry box, suggested journal titles appear below the box. Clicking on a name will transfer it to the box in full.

Journal names entered by hand must be exactly as shown in the list; searching on partial names will not return any results. To search across multiple journal names, please use semicolon ( ; ) as a separator, e.g.

  • J. Anal. At. Spectrom.; J. Am. Chem. Soc.
