Professor John Polanyi joins the PCCP Honorary Board

05 August 2009

We are delighted to announce that Professor John Polanyi, of the University of Toronto, Canada, has accepted our invitation to join the PCCP Honorary Board.

John Polanyi
Professor Polanyi has a long history of involvement with the Royal Society of Chemistry and he became an Honorary Fellow in 1991. He has been a regular contributor to Faraday Discussions, which included delivering the 23rd Spiers Memorial Lecture at Faraday Discussion 84 in 1987 when he was the RSC Spiers prize winner.

Professor Polanyi won the 1986 Nobel Prize along with D.R. Herschbach and Y.T. Lee for their research into the method of infrared chemiluminescence. In this work they were able to measure the extremely weak infrared emission from newly formed molecules to reveal the detailed energy disposal during chemical reactions.

He is also a Fellow of the Royal Societies of Canada (F.R.S.C.), of London (F.R.S.), and of Edinburgh (F.R.S.E.), and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and has over thirty honorary degrees from six different countries.

Professor Polanyi is the eighth member of the Board, joining Professors Eigen, Ernst, Ertl, Jortner, Kroto, Miller and Zare, and we are delighted to have his support.
