In this topic we extend the idea of an equilibriium constant to gaseous reactions, introducing the equilibrium constant Kp.

After working through this topic you will be able to:

  • understand the meaning of the terms partial pressure and mole fraction;
  • devise expressions for Kp for homogeneous and heterogeneous gaseous reactions and devise units for Kp;
  • understand the link between Kc and Kp;
  • identify misconceptions that students have about Kc;
  • appreciate the difficulties some students have in calculating Kc and put into practice strategies to help them.
