Understanding and using the periodic table

Understanding and using the periodic tab...

The periodic table is central to our understanding and classification of the world around us. The power of the periodic table lies not in the fact that it contains all known elements, but in that the particular ordering of the elements sheds light on their physical and chemical properties, enabling us to explain chemical reactions, predict results and understand the trends and patterns that we observe in the classroom. This course will look not only at ways of understanding the periodic table but also at how it can be used to develop the learning and understanding of your students, demystifying the periodic table and equipping them to use it in everyday chemistry.

As a result of taking this course, you will be able to:

  • use the history of the periodic table to help develop problem-solving skills in your students;
  • relate the position of an element in the periodic table to its underlying atomic structure;
  • explain the chemical and physical properties of elements with reference to the periodic table;
  • understand and address common student misconceptions;
  • develop an approach to teaching which maximises the potential of the periodic table.
