In a chemical reaction new substances are made. The starting materials are called reactants and the new substances that form are called products. When chemical change occurs there is rearrangement of the atoms in the reactants to a new arrangement of atoms in the products.

After working through this topic you will be able to:

  • understand what is meant by a chemical reaction;
  • know what challenges are faced by students; and
  • develop techniques to assist your students' understanding of chemical change and the basis of collision theory.
