This course is a 1-day classroom-based course covering the basic theory of Gas Chromatography and its related techniques including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A short practical is carried out in the classroom demonstrating the principles of chromatography that is referred to during subsequent presentations and discussions. The course also includes a Questions and Answers session at the end of the day making it the course to attend for understanding the basics of Gas Chromatography and GC-MS.
The 1-day Absolute Basics course consists of 5 major topics which focuses on the What? How? Why? Where? and When? of GC & GC-MS.
What? – Gives an explanation of what is Gas Chromatography by looking at the brief history of how chromatography was discovered and how various chromatographic techniques then developed. This section then covers the definition of both Gas Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry which are dissected to identify and define the technical terms commonly used. This provides a firm foundation to then understand how chromatography works.
How? – This section gives delegates the understanding of how the separation process occurs followed by the identification of the individual GC instrument components such as gas supplies, inlets, columns & detectors (including mass selective detectors). For each component delegates are given a basic understanding of the function and operation of that component.
Why? – This section details why GC & GC-MS is used in terms of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The use of external and internal calibration standards are also covered.
Where? – This section looks at the considerations of preparing raw samples for introducing into the GC system, taking into account the physical states and sampling location. A selection of sampling techniques are detailed such as thermal desorption, headspace, solid phase extraction and pyrolysis.
When? – This section looks at a number of industries where GC/GC-MS and the previously discussed sampling techniques have been used as a two-way interaction session. Knowledge gained from the previous sections is confirmed by reviewing various GC & GC-MS applications and identifying the reasons why the particular techniques were chosen.
At the end of the course the delegate will have basic knowledge of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. They will have an understanding of sampling techniques, carrier gases, sample introduction techniques, columns and GC detectors or mass spectrometers.
This course provides a good foundation for attending any of the Complete and Comprehensive GC & GC-MS courses.
