3rd Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates

2 - 4 August 2008, Sweden

Introduction
Microbial diseases remain the most common cause of global mortality and morbidity. In
particular, one of the most serious issues is the escalating prevalence of resistance to antimicrobials. Thus to advance the current knowledge of bacterial pathogens and to understand their in vivo behavior is of utmost importance. Carbohydrates are major cell surface constituents of all bacteria. These molecules play key roles in the biology of these organisms and have been found to be important virulence factors in pathogenic species. In addition, several products from Gram-negative bacteria including xanthan and gellan are accepted products of modern biotechnology. Scientists in the Baltic countries have made significant contribution towards advancing the field of glycosciences over many years. Scientific exchange among Baltic carbohydrate chemists occurs frequently on several levels but needs to be encouraged and in this context the "Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates” is of high importance.

In year 1988, a meeting at the Research Center in Borstel, Germany, initiated the Baltic "get-together”. Since 2004 the meeting is called "Baltic Meeting on Microbial Carbohydrates”. For the next year meeting in Sweden, four plenary lectures are invited to cover the state-of-the-art analytical techniques, LPS biosynthesis, carbohydrate synthesis correlated to immunology and vaccines and bacterial polysaccharides of industrial importance. Further oral presentations will be selected from submitted abstracts. In particular young scientists will be given the chance to present their work as oral or poster presentations.
