TOP OF THE BENCH
(regional heat sponsored
by the Mid Southern Counties local section)
Thursday 27th NOVEMBER 2014
10:00 to 3:30
Portsmouth Grammar School, Science Laboratories
The Top of the Bench competition is a national chemistry competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry for 14–16 year old students. This event presents an opportunity for gifted and talented students to use their chemistry in a fun and competitive way.
We invite your school to submit a team to take part in this annual event. The competition will take the form of practical and written challenges and will be held in the chemistry laboratories at Portsmouth Grammar School. In order to comply with national rules the team must consist of:
2 pupils from Y9, 1 pupil from Y10 and one from Y11.
The winning team on the day will receive a trophy and be invited to compete in the National Finals that are to be held in London in the Spring of 2015.
There are only a limited number of places available because of restrictions on accommodation and applications will be accepted strictly on a first come first served basis.
The competition has a practical element with the pupils being asked to show that they can work as a team, demonstrate safe working practices in a clean & tidy manner, use their intuition in arriving at a way to solve the problem and that they understand the chemistry behind what they have done.
To secure your place please contact:
Mark Howson at m.howson@pgs.org.uk
We are looking forward to seeing you and your team. It is essential that you are at the School for the 10:00 start to allow for the necessary introductions, explanations, demonstrations and safety briefing. Minibuses can be parked on site. The practical competition will start promptly at 10:15. There is no charge and lunch is provided.
