This lecture will explore the role of the forensic chemist and where chemistry comes into it. It will be illustrated by various case studies which will show why chemists are needed in this profession. Examples will include investigation of a fire on an aircraft in which no-one was injured and for which no-one initially understood the cause (because they weren’t chemists.) The cause was ascertained by a chemist and this resulted in various recommendations being made for changes to goods that can be carried on board aircraft. Various fires and their causes will be explained as well as marks enhancement, drugs of abuse and the continuing role of the forensic chemist to analyse and identify designer drugs.
It will further illustrate how a chemistry degree will help you in a Forensic Science career.
