A Chemistry Public Lecture for RSC Chemistry Week to celebrate the International Year of Light 2015: "Perkin's Purple Planet and Me" - a brief historical survey about how important one scientific discovery can be Dr Julie Hyde (Sheffield University)
This lecture tells the story about the discovery of Perkins Purple Dye back in 1856 and how this important discovery has led to some major advances in the chemical industry. The talk briefly mentions various dyes that were derived from this first discovery and how the application of these chemicals has led to some important chemicals that are in use today. The lecture is intended to be a fun and interesting event with the level of chemistry being of general interest so there is something for everyone including how a research group went on to unravel the mystery of a chemical mixture.
