Title: Radical materials and devices with doublet emission
Abstract: Organic radical materials have unpaired electrons with unusual physics for next-generation organic electronics. By exploiting their quantum-mechanical doublet-spin character, we have shown that luminescent radicals can be used for overcoming the spin statistical efficiency limit in organic light-emitting diodes. We will discuss why most pi-radical systems have poor optical properties, and how we can increase absorption and luminescence yields. We also found that some radical molecules do not follow the Aufbau principle: the singly occupied molecular orbital lies below the highest (doubly) occupied molecular orbital, and can be exploited in more efficient optoelectronics.
