The RSC Law Group will be holding its biennial and highly popular “IP for Innovators” event on Thursday, 29 June 2023 from 12:30pm at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J 0BA.
This event will provide the audience with an overview of intellectual property (IP), including patents and trade secrets and the relevance of IP to business, through a mixture of talks, interactive workshops and a panel discussion. Topics that will be covered include an introduction to patents and other IP rights, how to identify inventions, and the importance of intellectual property for start-ups and SMEs.
The panel discussion will explore "Building an Invention into a Business", from conception, to investment and beyond. Marvine Besong of Recycling Technologies and Asel Sartbaeva of Ensilicated Technologies Ltd will share their respective experiences of growing their research from the lab into a commercial venture. New business ventures can rarely succeed in isolation so Johnathan Matlock of Science Angel Syndicate will share his viewpoint as an inventor and investor in innovative new businesses while Ian Craven of Croda Europe Ltd will discuss the benefits of partnerships between multinationals and growing start-ups and SMEs. The event will be delivered by a number of experts from the IP profession, including practitioners from leading law firms as well as practitioners based in-house with multinational corporate innovators.
This event is suitable for entrepreneurs, researchers in industry and academia, undergraduate and PhD students, and anyone wishing to understand how to protect their IP. This event is open to RSC members as well as non-members.
The event will be followed by a canapé and drinks reception, giving attendees the chance to network in the great surroundings of Burlington House.
The talks and panel discussion will also be live streamed for those attendees unable to join us in person. However, the interactive workshops are only available for those attending in-person at Burlington House.
Accessibility: The event is located in the RSC building at the historic Burlington House. The RSC can provide a mobile ramp to access the building. Toilet facilities including an accessible toilet are on ground level and a lift provides access to the first floor where the Library is located. A hearing loop is available in the Library. Johnathan Matlock, Science Angel Syndicate - Johnathan is an active angel investor with a portfolio of 49 frontier science and technology companies. Johnathan is a NED and board observer for several companies in his portfolio including Argonaute RNA, Glaia, Genome Key and Anaphite. He is an advisor for Elbow Beach Capital and Ascension Ventures Life Fund. Johnathan is co-founder of Science Angel Syndicate, founded in 2021 with a mission to source world-class scientific discoveries, provide unique scientific due diligence and help investors to identify exceptional investment opportunities. Johnathan holds a PhD from the University of Bristol in Organic Chemistry and is a Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Johnathan was part of the science team who patented (WO/2018/167503) a platform technology that could unlock the ability to create the world’s first glucose responsive insulin. The commercial journey was realised through University of Bristol spin-out Ziylo, which was acquired in August 2018 by Novo Nordisk A/S in a staged M&A for up to £623m.
Marvine Besong, Recycling Technologies - Marvine has spent nearly a decade in process design, detailed engineering, plant construction and commissioning, plant operation, troubleshooting and optimisation and more than five years leading the development of RT's core technology. He has an MSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nottingham. Marvine also spent some time working as a design and projects lead in a Manufacturing environment. He also led patent applications to further protect RT’s technology and created a structured team for the R&D and engineering functions.
Ian Craven, Croda Europe Ltd - Ian is an experienced patent attorney who manages the global patent portfolio for Croda’s Personal Care, Home Care and Fragrances businesses. Croda is a multinational Life Sciences and Consumer Care company which focuses on innovation and sustainability in its ingredients. Our ingredients are found in products that touch lives every day from life-saving pharmaceuticals and sun protection to crop yields and seed enhancement.
Asel Sartbaeva, Ensilicated Technologies Ltd (EnsiliTech) - Asel is a co-founder and CEO of EnsiliTech, a Reader in Chemistry at the University of Bath, and a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF “Girls in Science” Program in Kyrgyzstan. She is a co-inventor of ensilication, a technology for stabilisation of vaccines and other biologicals for easier transport and storage, which is being commercialised by EnisliTech. Among numerous awards and accolades, she was named Woman of the Year by FDM Everywoman award in 2021. She is one of 175 Faces of Chemistry by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and was awarded IChemE Biochemistry and WISE World awards in 2017. Asel received Hanson medal in 2019, and won the Emerging Technologies Competition, in Health category by RSC in 2020. She holds today an Enterprise Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
