North South Lecture Series 2023

17 November 2023 17:00-20:00, Dublin, Ireland

Introduction
There are two elements to this event which we have combined to encourage a wide audience.

The first is the Republic of Ireland Local Section Annual General Meeting which will introduce the new members of our LS committee to the assembly of RSC members that they represent (starts @17:00).

The second celebrates the Republic of Ireland's contribution to the North South Lecture Series (starts @18:00). Enabled through a member bequest these lectures seek to promote collaboration and cooperation between local sections, North and South, on the island of Ireland.

Recognising that we all inhabit the same island, the local sections have organised a lecture series built around important environmental themes. These showcase the application of chemical thinking and chemistry-based technologies.

Water, air and pollution do not recognise human boundaries and extend beyond our borders. The Northern Ireland speaker Leon Barron (Reader in Analytical and Environmental Science at Imperial College London) opened the series by talking about the importance of Environmental Water Analysis for 'One Health'.

The Republic of Ireland speakers Suresh Pillai (Director,Health and Biomedical Centre, Atlantic Technology University (ATU)) and Brenda Kenegahn (previously senior conservation scientist, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)) will be following the opening of the series with a sister event in Dublin. Their talks are entitled 'Chemistry Innovation: from Lab to Market' and 'Plastics - Not Quite so Fantastic'
The lectures will be held back-to-back followed by a Q&A session and reception in the School of Chemistry, Main Chemistry Building, Trinity College Dublin.

The lecture are open to the general public (as part of 'Science Week' in Ireland) and to all RSC members to attend.
