Are you at a cross-road with your career and considering a new direction? Florian Bay has undertaken two career pivots which have transformed his life so come along and gain useful insights which may help you on your career journey. This presentation is part of the Management Interest Group's "Beyond the lab" series.
Florian moved to the UK in 2005 to study Chemistry at the University of Bath. Throughout his studies he learnt that everything can be transformed into valuable products under the right conditions, but little did he know back then that Lavoisier's maxim of 'nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed' would end up applying to his career as well. An interest in energy led him to work for the UK's largest electricity generator post-university, taking him from nuclear power station control rooms to corporate offices working on strategic planning and decision-making. On the night shift in Hartlepool, he began to think more like an engineer as he witnessed how many processes intersected to turn energy from nuclear fission into electricity. While working on spreadsheets and balance sheets, he saw how numbers, facts and data could drive investment decisions forward.
He embarked on a journey of discovery in public speaking and leadership in 2013 by joining Toastmasters International. This journey culminated in leading the Southern UK District (180 clubs and 5,000 members) to achieve the prestigious recognition of Distinguished District and 2nd in the world on a major quality metric despite challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a senior leader and decision-maker, Florian used his scientific knowledge to challenge the status quo, create innovative strategic initiatives and instil a culture of data-driven decision-making. He also witnessed the personal transformation of many of his peers from nervous speakers into confident presenters and facilitators.
His desire to help others develop themselves, coupled with his passion for the ever-changing field of data science, led him to join the UK’s largest EdTech unicorn Multiverse as a Data Science coach. In this role, he supports learners in developing skills to drive the digital transformation of their businesses forward. He additionally runs his leadership and communication consultancy Speak to Lead.
