On European Antibiotics Awareness Day your 6th form students are invited to the Chemistry Centre where Nicholas Brown shall introduce antibiotics, how they have become an essential part of our lives and the role that they play in every aspect of modern healthcare.
The discovery and exploitation of the penicillin group of antibiotics provides a good example of how bacteria can become resistant to these agents, and how chemical modification has been used to generate new compounds to overcome these resistance mechanisms.
