Help with tracking research impact
Altmetric data helps authors to keep track of the impact their research is having in the wider community.
We’ve added Altmetric to all of our journals, which means that authors will be better able to monitor the online conversations that are happening about their research. The data will also help you to understand the ways in which articles are being perceived from within and outside the academic community.
Sharon Duan, Associate Product Development Manager at the Royal Society of Chemistry, explains:
Researchers care about what people are saying about their work and there is an increasing need to show the impact their publications are having beyond just citations.
Altmetric collects article level metrics and the online conversations around research. By combining a selection of online indicators including social media channels, mainstream newspapers, magazines and government policy documents, Altmetric display a record of all the online attention an article has received via their colourful ‘donuts’ and details pages, and the scores provide a measurement of digital impact and reach.
Altmetric scores and details pages instantly visualise a paper’s online attention and allows researchers to see what people are saying about their paper and can tell them how much attention a paper is receiving relative to their peers. As librarians, you will be able to showcase a richer picture of your institutional research impact to faculty, staff and students.
About Altmetric:
Altmetric provide altmetrics data to publishers, institutions, researchers and funders. They track a range of online sources, including mainstream news outlets, blogs, social media platforms, research highlight platforms, peer review platforms, policy documents and Wikipedia. They accumulate mentions of research outputs from these sources, and display a record of all the online attention an article has received.
