The Pan Africa Chemistry Network in Ghana
The Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) has four Hubs across Africa, helping to coordinate the work we do for chemical sciences across the continent. Our Ghanaian Hub, based primarily at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), acts as a focal point for our local activity in this country.
The Hub is also run in partnership with Cape Coast University.
I am just so excited and most grateful to the Royal Society of Chemistry and GSK, the installation of the solar power back up means the equipment is now running 24/7. Really good for science in Africa.
Highlights from our work in Ghana:
- Five very successful training workshops, in which close to 100 participants gained specialist GC-MS and LC-MS knowledge. These courses are flagship events for analytical chemistry in Ghana.
- Facilitating the international conference on materials chemistry – 'Renewable and sustainable energy from the African hot sun: Can materials chemistry help to deliver?' The conference attracted speakers and participants from the UK, Denmark, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ghana.
- The Ghana Hub hosted the 2011 PACN Congress on ‘Agricultural Productivity’ and the 2017 PACN Congress on ‘Sustainable Agriculture; How the Chemical Sciences Can Contribute to Food Security for a Growing Population’.
- The installation of a new solar powered inverter at KNUST, providing a stable power supply to support the analytical science lab’s equipment.
