Our strategy
The Environment, Sustainability and Energy Community is an inter-connected community advancing knowledge and application of chemistry relating to the environment, sustainability and energy.
ESEC’s strategy focusses on three strategic priorities:
- Linking People - to foster and strengthen links between those working in the fields of environment, sustainability, and energy
- Advancing Knowledge - to further the exchange of knowledge in the areas of environment, sustainability, and energy, for example through the development of events, workshops, and symposia
- Policy - to inform and influence policy in the areas of environment, sustainability, and energy
ESEC encourages and promotes advances in the fields of:
- Health and safety
- Environmental chemistry
- Toxicology
- Hazard management
- Green chemical technology
- Energy and sustainability
Meet the members of the ESEC Council who are responsible for ensuring that the Community fulfils its purpose.
Andrew Chiffey
Elected member
Andrew is a Global Product Development Manager at Johnson Matthey. He has worked across various areas of chemistry including catalysis, refining and emissions control for over 30 years. He is a Fellow of the RSC and active in the RSC mentor programme.
Sheena Hindocha
Elected member
Sheena Hindocha is Knowledge Transfer Manager - Materials Chemistry at KTN.
With a PhD in Chemistry Dr Sheena Hindocha supports the development of innovation across multiple fields including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Hydrogen, Circular Economy, Batteries, Carbon Capture and Utilisation, Critical Minerals and Alternative Feedstocks.
Tomás Sherwen
Environmental Chemistry Group representative
Tomás is an experienced Researcher and Scientist, employed as a Data Scientist in government working on air quality (DEFRA/DfT) alongside separate project and client work. Tomás spent 10 years in academia, working and publishing (~50 papers) on geoscience, numerical modelling, future fuels, & data science.
After an international career working with collaborators on projects across the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia, Tomás held a permanent joint role as a Research Scientist for the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and as a Research Fellow (Asst. Prof.) at a Russell Group University before he moved into public and private sector work.
The Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division was formed in 2003 in order to support, manage and co-ordinate more effectively on behalf of the members, and in line with our Charter, the interests of its associated RSC Interest Groups. Prior to its status as a Division, the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division was an RSC Forum Group.
In 2020, the RSC commissioned a review of the Divisions. One of the key recommendations of the Review was that the Divisions be reorganised into Subject Communities to better support the communities and members they represented, and to allow for better integration and collaboration with interest groups and other Communities. From July 2022 the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division became the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Community.
