Royal baby arrival opens opportunity for people to smell Adamas, the royal perfume

To mark the royal birth, the Royal Society of Chemistry will tonight offer guests at its annual summer party at Burlington House a smell of Adamas, the perfume created especially for The Queen as a gift from scientists in her Jubilee year. 

Nobody will be allowed to touch the perfume, which only the monarch can wear.

The perfume will be decanted from a protective metal flask kept in a vault at the society's Victorian building on Piccadilly.

The Queen is patron of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Dr Robert Parker, chief executive of the society, said: "Usually we would not allow people to have any access to the royal perfume. However, we wanted to mark the royal birth and we believed that this might be a novel way of doing it within a day of the heir being born."
