Captivating Chemistry: Photo competition winners announced
Our Huddersfield and District Local Section has announced the winners of their photo competition entitled 'Captivating Chemistry'.
First, second and prize winners were chosen from a total of around 30 entries. The top three entries received cash prizes of £200, £100 and £50.
First prize – Greg Nixon
'Water in water'
"I am a novice photographer but love to experiment with macro and water shots."
Taken with a Nikon D70 at F/13 in aperture priority mode. The lens was a Nikon 70–300 with an add on Raynox 250 macro lens attached.
Second prize – Jason Camp
'A spoon full of sugar'
"My research group has become captivated by the ability of simple sugars to power catalytic processes – sugar-powered catalysis. This photo depicts a mock-up of a research student adding a little bit of glucose to a reaction as part of this research programme."
Third prize – Robert Williams
"The image is of a fascinating star in the southern hemisphere constellation of Carina.
"This star is trying to remain stable by expelling a sizeable percentage of its mass as quickly as possible, and it is this that is creating the nebula around the star – the star is the 'dumbbell-shaped' nucleus near the centre of this image.
"The image was taken in May 2014 from Tivoli Astro Farm, Namibia."
The image was taken using a Canon 60Da and a Takahashi FSQ106 telescope, at an exposure of approximately 150 seconds at ISO 2000.
