Accreditation in Malaysia
The Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has recently achieved accreditation for its undergraduate chemistry programmes.
During a recent visit to Kuala Lumpar, the University of York's Dr Jason Lynam (who is chair of our Committee of Accreditation and Validation) and a delegation were able to formally present the certificate to UPM's Vice Chancellor, Professor Datin Paduka Dr Aini Ideris.
Professor Ideris said: "This news is very encouraging and clearly shows that the chemistry programmes offered by Universiti Putra Malaysia have high international standards.
"Through this accreditation, graduates have many opportunities such as working in industry, getting involved in research and professional services in the international arena. This recognition has made UPM stand out for being a reputable institution of higher learning in chemistry."
Jason Lynam adds: "The Royal Society of Chemistry is proud and pleased to accredit a number of universities in Malaysia. Through these interactions we are being inclusive of Malaysian teaching techniques and the culture in general.
"It’s particularly satisfying to see the confidence we give both students and universities that degree programmes are robust and give grounding to future study. UK chemistry departments see many applications from Malaysian students and our accreditation gives assurance in recruitment of these students."
What is university accreditation?
Accreditation of degree programmes by professional and statutory bodies is a mark of assurance that particular standards are met. Accredited programmes address the needs of employers and students, and provide marketing advantages for universities.
Our accreditation is a peer review process founded on the judgement of professional chemists. It is a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate and enhance the quality of degree programmes and demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement. This ultimately provides a credible and independently verifiable method for employers and students to differentiate between degree programmes.
