Highlights from the Royal Society of Chemistry Twitter Poster Conference 2018
Our annual Twitter Poster Conference has come to an end this morning, after 24 hours of non-stop tweeting and knowledge-sharing from around the globe. Take a look at how the action unfolded.
By the small hours of Tuesday morning, well before the 9 am start time, enthusiastic conference attendees were already 'pinning up' their posters, and anticipation was building...
5 hrs until #RSCPoster ! Looking forward to the shortest commute to a conference ever pic.twitter.com/2nuIYBFrAc

Super excited for today's RSC Twitter Conference! Check out my PhD research in my poster titled, "Towards the Total Synthesis of Pectenotoxin-4"! #RSCPoster #RSCOrg pic.twitter.com/M3AiNd5u9l

Members of the scientific committee set out their expectations...
Heads up #RSCPoster #RSCEnv participants:
— Nadine (@nadineborduas) 6 March 2018
I expect chemical structures to have correct bond angles and relative bond length.
Respect hybridized orbitals for the win! (Cc @ChemDraw)
...and the conference kicked off in earnest!
Strap yourself in. Posters ready. Coffee to hand. It's #RSCPoster time!!!! Please ensure you use the hashtags in all discussion and most of all, enjoy the day! Let's get to the science...
— Edward Randviir (@EdwardRandviir) 6 March 2018
Here we go - loads up already. Happy poster conferencing #rscposter Hopefully the biggest poster conference in the world today
— Matt Baker (@ChemistryBaker) 6 March 2018
A core component of the conference is the opportunity for members of the scientific committee, and other researchers, to quiz exhibitors on their work.
#RSCPoster How do your conversion rates compare with systems currently in use?
— Lynn Dennany (@DennanyChem) 6 March 2018
Thanks Dr. Goodacre! The main limitation is the physical resolution of the "looped" bands on a gel. So far, we have succeeded in multiplexing for 8 unique (synthetic) targets. #RSCPoster #RSCAnalytical #RSCNano
— Arun Richard (@arunrichardc) 6 March 2018
Things started getting competitive, with the recently-added Education hashtag really taking off...
Chem Ed really getting into this! Perhaps they'll beat Materials for the number of posters this year! #RSCPoster
— Edward Randviir (@EdwardRandviir) 6 March 2018
An update on the #RSCPoster conference - #RSCEdu still leading the way, although #RSCAnalytical has closed the gap, whilst pulling ahead of #RSCMat
— Edward Randviir (@EdwardRandviir) March 6, 2018
Total number of tweets now over 3200, a total audience of over 1.5 million and over 5.4 million total impressions. Keep it up! pic.twitter.com/Q4l4TFvN6k
Surprising lines of research emerged...
This is interesting...I had never thought about lab anxiety. I know ours 'like' labs because it is somewhere they feel they have more control over their own marks (than in say exams) #RSCEdu #RSCPoster
— Kristy Turner (@doc_kristy) March 6, 2018
Organisers Edward Randviir and Matt Baker kept everyone going...
Amazing level of contributions from all sections of the #rscposter. I don’t think I have been able to access such a wide variety them research at a single conference before
— Matt Baker (@ChemistryBaker) 6 March 2018
I'm going mobile for a couple of hours while I travel - the participation levels are already through the roof #RSCPoster keep the dialogue going everyone
— Edward Randviir (@EdwardRandviir) 6 March 2018
...and the audience at large were extremely complimentary!
#RSCPoster is blowing my mind
— Laurie Points (@LauriePoints) 6 March 2018
@BrilliantClub There's a chemistry Twitter Conference being ran by @RoySocChem over the next two days. It's a really great opportunity for #FairAccess because all of the posters are free to view and you can ask the researchers questions #RSCPoster #RSCEnv https://t.co/8925sTKKvZ
— Natalie Lamb (@Natnotgnats) 6 March 2018
I'm enjoying excellent multi-disciplinary science on #RSCPoster What a great opportunity to see lots of applied analytical chemistry around the world.
— Malama Chisanga (@ChisangaMalama) 6 March 2018
Indeed Chemistry is a central science #RSCAnalytical https://t.co/JC4cg82ofY
amazed by all the #RSCPoster tweets today... some even boasting beautiful animations! Back in my day if the poster pics were moving you'd probably had enough 🍷 😅
— Lee Burton (@leeaburton) 6 March 2018
The #RSCPoster conference is probably my favorite excuse to use Twitter at work today.
— Samson Lai (@samson_lai) 6 March 2018
Meanwhile researchers over in the States started waking up...
It's little past 5 AM on the US east coast. Still in bed with cup of joe and attending Royal Society of Chemistry Twitter poster conference. Awesome science on display. #RSCPoster
— Miloš Miljković (@miishke) 6 March 2018
Good morning America! Here's my #RSCPoster - do hit me up with any questions or suggestions!
— Laurie Points (@LauriePoints) 6 March 2018
Would also love to hear what other applications people can think of for smart automation in chemical research? #RSCMat #RSCEng https://t.co/TszwjhKKQc
Wake up #RSCPoster Europeans for stage two! The North/South Americans are coming!
— Alex Stirk (@AlexJStirk) 6 March 2018
Some people were starting to overdo it...
I've done that much tweeting today that Twitter thought I was a robot and locked my account! #RSCPoster is to blame
— Edward Randviir (@EdwardRandviir) 6 March 2018
...and others were flagging...
Definitely bed time in Australia East coast - looking forward to more #RSCposter tomorrow! pic.twitter.com/VtpO9u2kR6
— Jeffrey Mak (@JeffreyYWMak) 6 March 2018
...but the discussion continued...
Hi Michael, thanks for the beautiful poster! What happens if you use very short or very long alkyl chains?#RSCPoster #RSCMat
— Athina Anastasaki (@AthinaAnastasa1) 6 March 2018
Nice poster! What are the advantages of using hollow gold particles here? How does their behaviour compare to solid gold particles? #RSCPoster #RSCNano
— Gemma-Louise Davies (@GemmaLouDavies) 6 March 2018
The numbers of tweets continued to mount, and competition for the most popular hashtag became fierce:
An update on the #RSCPoster conference - #RSCEdu still leading the way, although #RSCAnalytical has closed the gap, whilst pulling ahead of #RSCMat
