There’s still time to enter the Royal Society of Chemistry Emerging Technologies Competition 2022
Entries must be submitted by 18 April
This year, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Emerging Technologies Competition, which invites the next generation of tech innovators, start-ups and spin outs to come forward with innovative and promising chemistry tech from across Europe.
The programme provides a unique platform for innovators to engage directly with and learn from large multinational partners and judges - including AstraZeneca, Boots, BP, Ceres, Croda, Givaudan, Innospec, Johnson Matthey, Eli Lilly, NSG Group, Pepsico, Petronas, Scott Bader, Reckitt Benckiser, RSSL, and Unilever - to build exposure and unrivalled industry validation for their projects.
Emily Vipond, Programme Manager for the Emerging Technologies Competition said: “Reflecting on how modern chemistry has evolved, we have refreshed the competition categories, with opportunities across Enabling Technologies, Energy, Environment and Health. In each case we are looking for technical feasibility, a realistic approach to commercialisation, alongside genuine impact and market potential.”
Over the years we have welcomed more than 1,200 applications agile tech innovators, start-ups and spin-outs from 23 countries. In turn 266 finalists have been selected to present to our dedicated panel of judges and competition partners, leading to 60 crowned winners. Many of the competition entrants have gone onto to commercial success.
Helen Pain, Royal Society of Chemistry Chief Executive, added: “In this 10th anniversary year it is timely to pause and take stock of the development of the Emerging Technologies Competition since it started. What began as a small event now has a record 16 competition industry partners supporting the competition, representing many of the most recognised companies in the chemical sciences industry.
“It continues to be a fantastic initiative to identify and support entrepreneurs who are developing ground-breaking, chemistry-led innovations. We believe it plays a vital role in promoting technologies that tackle societal challenges, support a sustainable future and drive economic growth.”
Previous winners, tackling global issues
Last year’s winners presented solutions to an incredible variety of issues, from stabilising vaccines without refrigeration to converting waste carbon dioxide into useful biochemicals. In 2022, the competition is once again calling on entrants to demonstrate the challenges they could help to overcome for the benefit of the scientific community, industry and society as a whole.
Emily added: “It is clear the competition can successfully identify exciting prospects. Previous winners have already gone on to raise a combined total of over £149m in equity investment and grant funding. Others have successfully conducted clinical and industrial scale trials, entered commercial production and duly expanded overseas.
“The Emerging Technologies Competition team are very much looking forward to seeing the creative ideas and innovations that are going to help shape the world of tomorrow.”
Applicants have until 18 April to submit their entries. A shortlist of finalists will be revealed in late May, ahead of the Emerging Technologies Final event in early July.
