Successful conclusion of Burlington House lease negotiations
The Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has announced the successful conclusion of a process that will grant the Royal Society of Chemistry and our Learned Society neighbours a 999-year leasehold agreement for Burlington House.
Royal Society of Chemistry CEO Dr Helen Pain said: “We welcome the opportunity to secure our long-term occupancy of New Burlington House. The outcome of the discussions with the Government enables the continuation of our work in support of our charitable purpose.
“We have taken care to consider all options and make an informed decision based on the priorities of our society and we are looking forward to the next chapter and working with our neighbours around the Courtyard.”
The agreement, made between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Learned Societies at Burlington House in London’s Piccadilly, will secure the Societies’ location for 999 years.
The Geological Society (GSL), The Linnean Society (LSL), The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and The Society of Antiquaries (SAL) all reside at New Burlington House, which was built by Government in the 19th century to support their work.
Baroness Scott of Bybrook, Minister in the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, said: “This is a great deal which gives the Learned Societies a strong foundation for the future, and delivers good value for taxpayers at the same time.
“We have been working hard to ensure that they can continue to deliver their valuable contribution to public life, and I am pleased that they now have a permanent home, making these important collections accessible to more people – especially young people."
Royal Society of Chemistry president Professor Gill Reid welcomed the news, saying: "Burlington House holds a special place in the hearts of many people who, like me, have a long association with the Royal Society of Chemistry. I am pleased to see a positive solution to the negotiations, which will enable future generations to continue to pass through its doors and to deliver the chemistry that makes the world a better place."
