6th National Retrosynthesis Competition
Friday 15 March 2019 at the SCI Headquarters in Belgrave Square saw a celebration of organic chemistry in the form of the final of the 6th National Retrosynthesis Competition.
This event was jointly organised by members of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Heterocyclic and Synthesis Group and Fine Chemicals Group, and the Young Chemists Panel of the SCI, under the leadership of Dr Jason Camp from the University of Bath.
Around 40 teams entered the preliminary round in December 2018, of which 11 were selected for the final by the judging panel. The finalists were drawn from a broad cross-section of chemistry-based organisations, universities and academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations (CROs) and agrochemicals.

At the final, teams presented their synthetic strategies for the as yet un-synthesized natural product, aconicarmisulfonine A (DOI: 10.1021/acs.orglett.7b03956), and answered questions from the audience and judges challenging their reasoning and route selection. The winning team was "Flower Power" from Syngenta and the runners up were "Shawshank Reduction" from the University of Oxford in second place and "SygTeamTwo" from Sygnature Discovery in third. The audience prize was awarded to Evotec’s team "In Tsuji We Trost".

The organising committee would like to thank all of the teams who entered the competition for their contributions as well as the judges, guests, attendees, sponsors and exhibitors for their significant input into the event. We would particularly like to thank the SCI and Royal Society of Chemistry for their generous support for this year’s competition, which included the donation of a year’s SCI membership to all the members of the winning team and free attendance at a one day SCI conference as well as free attendance at the RSC Heterocyclic and Synthesis group’s January meeting.
Based upon enthusiastic positive feedback from participants and special guests on the day the competition was hugely successful, underlining the key central importance of synthetic organic chemistry in both fundamental and applied research in the UK. Taking that positive momentum forwards, the organising committee has already begun their planning for the 7th National Retrosynthesis Competition, which will start in October 2019 with the final to be held in March 2020.
