Introducing our new Catalyst consultations
Our Associate Members may have noticed that, as part of the recent changes in membership benefits, they now have access to our new Catalyst consultations, run by the career management team.
This new type of careers consultation was introduced in response to your feedback, and our ongoing mission to ensure our careers support is appropriate and accessible to the different career stages that make up our membership. This consultation is specially designed to support our Associate Members who may be contemplating their next career move, whether it be within academia, thinking about a move into industry or starting their own business.
As an early career professional you may know what you want to do next but aren’t sure how to get there, or perhaps you are thinking about making the jump from academia into an industrial role, but aren’t sure how to sell your skills to a future employer. Maybe you are coming to the end of your PhD and are feeling unsure about your future, and what you have to offer outside university. However you are feeling about your next step, one of our qualified career specialists will work one-on-one with you to help you understand how we can support you, how to define and work towards your career goals, and how to sell yourself, your experience and your skills to an employer, regardless of the path you are interested in.
I have been fortunate in being able to participate in a recent Catalyst consultation, which has proved instrumental in helping me understand the direction I want go in with my career. Numerous topics – including CPD, taking on additional responsibilities within my role and mentoring opportunities – were all discussed as part of the consultation that will prove significant in helping advance my career.
After the 45-minute session, you will leave with an increased sense of self-belief and plenty of career management tools to help you confidently take your next career step. If you are looking for a new role, or to make a career change, then the careers specialist will help you understand the best job search techniques and how to apply for and tailor your CV and cover letter to a specific role in a way that best demonstrates your skills and experience. If you are considering using a recruitment agency, they can also share their expertise in how to best work with them as a partner in finding your path.
Building a network
Whether you’re thinking of starting your own business or applying for a job, building a network of professional relationships is a very important tool to develop your knowledge and establish yourself in a specific field. Networking can be a daunting process but the career specialist can advise you on how to simplify the process, find suitable networking opportunities, online and in person, and share their top tips and techniques to help you make the most of these opportunities. Many of these activities can be accessed through our member networks and can help enhance transferable skills whilst expanding your network.
The career specialist will also walk you through why professional development is vital for your career development now, and in the future, and how your Royal Society of Chemistry membership can help you unlock your potential. We can show you how working through our professional awards as you progress through your career, taking you from Registered Scientist on to Chartered status, will demonstrate to employers your commitment, knowledge and expertise in the chemical sciences.
The Catalyst consultation can take place face-to-face, by phone or by video conference with any one of our qualified career specialists.
I’ve been to a careers consultation and they gave me some valuable advice, which helped me decide which way I wanted my career to go, deciding between academia and industry. More than anything, it gave me the confidence to follow the path that I wanted.
Each Associate Member is entitled to one Catalyst consultation to support you as you take your next step in this crucial career stage. We can follow up with email advice or a CV or cover letter review ahead of that important job application.
