The reported K values were miscalculated. As such the apparent K values for the linear ‘trimer and tetramer’ are 9.5±5 × 104 dm6 mol-2, 2.4±1.4 ×108 dm9 mol-3, respectively. That of the closed tetramer is 7±2 × 109 dm9 mol-3. The phrase ‘discrete squares and tapes’ may be misleading, and a better phrase may have been ‘tapes and discrete squares’. Thus the paper by Ercolani1 in this issue does not contradict our observations, but highlights the dynamics or complex equilibria involved in weakly bound systems—a known but important fact that we specifically pointed out. We thank this author for bringing this mistake to our attention.
