A referee highlighted a recent report on the 'Role of metal contaminants in catalyses with FeCl3' (S. L. Buchwald and C. Bolm, Angew. Chem., Int. Ed. Engl., 2009, 48, 5586–5587). In order to investigate the influence of the impurities in the FeCl3 on the reaction of sulfonyl azide with tertiary amine, the authors measured the contents of the metal impurities in the FeCl3 that they used and several control experiments were carried out. The results are given in the electronic supplementary information.
