The authors wish to point out the following errors:

The final sentence of the section titled ‘Reversibility of the hybrid scavenging film’ should refer to Fig. 2, not Fig. 1.

The caption for Fig. 1 is incorrect; the correct caption reads: ‘Fig. 1 Optical absorbance data for heterogeneous [film, ()] and homogeneous [solution, ()] sensing of Hg(II) concentration. Solid lines are numerical fits to eqn 1, the correlation of estimated mercury loaded on the TiO2–N719 film to mercury concentration (black) and binding mercury to N719 in solution (dark grey).’
