The authors wish to apologise for directly copying sections of their manuscript published in Journal of Materials Chemistry from those of A. M. Rijke’s paper, J. Exp. Biol., 1968, 48, 185 (which was cited as reference 6).

The author’s name was also spelled incorrectly, A. M. Bijke should read A. M. Rijke.
