Symmetrical bisquaryl ium dye 1, in which the same heterocyclic components were introduced at the 3 and 3' positions of the bisquarylium skeleton, was obtained by reacting 4,4'-bi(3-isopropoxy-3- cyclobutene-1,2-dione) 3 with a series of heterocyclic compound 5. The structure of one of the symmetrical dyes was confirmed by X-ray structural analysis, showing a largely extended pai-conjugation system over the molecule and J-aggregate of the dye molecule in single crystals. The synthesis of unsymmetrical dye 2 in which different aromatic components were introduced, was established by reactions of 5 with 3'-mono-substituted bisquarate 6.
