The authors regret the following error:

In the abstract we claimed that "The direct contact tests show that carboxymethylated-MFC presents a more cytocompatible profile than unmodified and trimethylammonium-MFC", whereas it should have said "The direct contact tests show that trimethylammonium-MFC presents a more cytocompatible profile than unmodified and carboxymethylated-MFC".

The Royal Society of Chemistry apologises for these errors and any consequent inconvenience to authors and readers.
