Units of Kp

The units of Kp can be worked out as follows:

  1. Write down all the units of the products. Remember that if a partial pressure is squared, the units are squared as well.
  2. Write down all the units of the reactants underneath those of the products.
  3. Cancel units that appear in both the top and bottom of the fraction.
  4. Write down the units that remain.
  5. Bring all the units to the top. We need to appreciate that 1/x2 is the same as x–2.

Now apply these ideas to some examples.

Note: It can be argued that Kp is actually a number and doesn't therefore have any units. In this section we have followed the line taken by UK Awarding Bodies in which units are assigned to Kp.
