Your questions answered
In what kind of experiments would students use solvent extraction?
Solvent extraction might be used :
- in the purification of an organic liquid such as bromobutane
- the extraction of a component of a natural product such as caffiene from tea
How can students learn to use a separating funnel?
Students can look at a video clip showing the use of a separating funnel but the best preparation is for you to demonstrate how to use one. This way you can model good practice and point out the key issues involved in the safe and effective use of the apparatus.
Are there any safety issues about solvent extraction?
The organic solvent may be flammable so there should be no nearby naked flames. It may be best to pour the solvent into the separating funnel in a fume cupboard but once the stopper is in place the funnel can be taken into the laboratory.
Students should be told to make sure that the stopper of the funnel does not come loose while they are shaking the flask. A demonstration is the best way to show how to do this.
