Can you identify with the young teacher in the character conversation?

Sometimes as teachers we need to take a step back and reflect upon our teaching approach. Is our teaching sequence supporting or hindering learning and student progress? If things aren't working, then it is always worth trying to take an alternative approach. It's really important that students have a good understanding of basic concepts in chemistry before they can progress to harder topics such as bonding and structure.

Students' ideas about chemical reactions are well documented and can be read about in Chapter 4 of Beyond Appearances: Student misconceptions about basic chemical ideas. Within the document, the following teaching sequence is suggested and their research evidence suggests that this approach helps student to overcome many of the barriers to learning that have already been dicussed.
