Flag Fen is an internationally important Bronze Age archaeological site; it houses many Bronze Age artefacts found around a wooden causeway and platform and some recently discovered Bronze Age log boats which are currently being conserved. It is an experimental archaeological site where the Bronze Age environment has been recreated. The survival of the archaeology for over three thousand years is due to the distinct chemistry of the area, and this chemistry is being changed by the way people use the landscape. During the visit to Flag Fen you will discover the science of archaeology. You will explore the water chemistry of the site, collecting and examining different specimens from different areas of the site and consider how the variables measured could affect the archaeology of the site and its survival. You will also find out how chemistry is ensuring the survival of the incredibly rare Bronze Age log boats.
