"Have you ever wondered what hallmarks actually mean? Why is some silver described as 'sterling silver' and some as just 'silver'? How do chemists determine how much gold is in jewellery? Find out about the work Sheffield Assay Office do to determine the composition of precious metals and see how they use chemical and spectroscopic techniques to check the purity of precious metals. Take a tour of the Hallmarking facilities and the laboratories. Come along to find out about almost two and half centuries worth of assaying and hallmarking history in Sheffield.
