This popular schools competition returns for another year in the West Midlands area. Teams of 4 students (2x Y9, 1x Y10, 1x Y11) from schools in the Birmingham and West Midlands area are invited to take part to pit their practical and paper-based problem-solving skills again each other.
The competition begins with a chemical knowledge written test sent to you to be returned by October half-term. From this the top 6 teams are selected for the regional final at Birmingham University on Saturday January 16th 2016. The winner of the regional final goes on to represent Birmingham and West Midlands in the UK final at Loughborough University on Saturday 16th April 2016.
Both the regional and national finals will test factual chemistry knowledge as well as a practical chemical problem-solving team exercise, where teamwork will be an essential factor.
In 2015 the team from King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys Birmingham won both the regional final and the national final. The regional final was very close fought with only 1½ points separating the top 4 teams. The top 3 teams in the regional final are awarded book tokens and the national winners are awarded the Top of the Bench trophy and £500 for their school to spend on chemistry equipment, as well as a gift voucher for each team member.
