Venture Capital in Chemicals: Structure, Risk and Reward

Introduction
Paul Smith presents a personal view of the role of private investment capital in the chemicals sector based on more than 10 years direct experience advising and leading venture capital backed businesses. The lecture describes the structure and sources of funds, including the growing role and development of corporate venturing, and describes the shift in investment criteria over the last decade. He will discuss the factors influencing investment and offer a few simple guidelines for creating, capturing and measuring value based primarily on the end game; a profitable exit for all key stakeholders.

Paul Smith has extensive strategic leadership experience, operating at board level in a number of private equity, venture capital and corporate businesses. He has a successful track record of delivery and investment/exit in chemicals based businesses and has over 40 years of knowledge of the chemicals, materials and allied industries. Paul is a specialist advisor in new technology investment, funding and commercialisation. He currently holds a number of senior positions including Chief Executive of the Catexel Group of companies. The Catexel Group is a VC backed investment by Unilever Ventures, developing disruptive catalyst technology serving the pulp & paper, detergents and cleaning, coatings (CASE) and textile markets. 1800 for 1830 start.
