Professional Development, Networking & Scientific Event

22 October 2015, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

Introduction
Talk 1:
"Herding Cats" (Dr Graham Dransfield, Knowledge Transfer Facilitator, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Cambridge)

Fancy a job working at the interface between academia and industry? Maybe you’ve spent decades working ‘at the coal face’ in industry (and we’ve all been to university for our degrees, haven’t we?) Sounds simple doesn’t it?
All is not, however, as it seems. On both sides of the fence, there are misconceptions and false expectations. On both sides there are widely differing perceptions. This talk will take a light hearted look at the challenges facing someone coming from industry to work in academe.
The talk will conclude with a taste of the broad spectrum of activities – from fuel combustion to schizophrenia - of a contemporary world leading science and technology department - and the breadth of knowledge required to represent it effectively.

Talk 2:
PEEKaboo, taking a peek at PEEK – Thermal analysis in the study of thermoplastics
(Tim Mann, Perkin-Elmer Thermal Analysis)

A discussion about modern thermal analysis methods such as Hyper DSC, showing the effect of fast heating and cooling rates on the structure of polymers and their use to examine the crystallinity of the polymer in its “as received” state, after production. Also presented will be how analysis of the composition of materials by TGA has been made easier, by developments in evolved gas analysis where it is now routine to link multiple techniques together such as TGA-GCMS to give greater insight.
