This meeting brings together directors of undergraduate chemistry teaching in UK universities to discuss policy issues that affect the sector and share examples of best practice.
The meeting will focus on the Teaching Excellence Framework but there will also be discussions about employability skills and transnational degree programmes.
Delegate input will be a really valuable part of the meeting. As well as lots of discussion, we are seeking specific input from delegates ahead of the meeting:
The meeting will run from 10:30am to 4:00pm and include the following topics:
1. Skills for employability in chemistry degree programmes
A series of short presentations about skills that are valued by employers when recruiting graduates. Delegates are also invited to share examples (see above for details)
2. Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)
a) Where we are with the TEF
A presentation and discussion session which will cover the progress of the TEF to date.
b) Chemistry-specific evaluation of teaching excellence
Delegates are asked to come prepared to discuss the following in small groups. Conclusions/recommendations will be shared with the whole group:
In the absence of any clear information on what TEF at a subject level might look like. Imagine you have a blank piece of paper and have to describe how you would demonstrate excellence in teaching in your department.
A discussion to inform the Royal Society of Chemistry response to the TEF technical consultation. Specific questions from the consultation may be tabled if available.
3. International collaborative chemistry degree programmes
An introduction to these degrees and exploration of the benefits, pitfalls and examples of differences across institutions.
4. Supporting teaching and learning in HE
An update about Royal Society of Chemistry activities.
