Nuclear energy in the UK: innovation, skills, and supply chain development

7 July 2016 09:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Guest of Honour: Matthew Clarke, Deputy Director, Nuclear Generation and International, Department of Energy and Climate Change.

This seminar will assess the latest developments in UK nuclear energy policy, including progress towards delivering new nuclear power stations such as Hinkley Point C and Moorside in Cumbria.

It follows the ‘policy reset’ speech delivered by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change citing nuclear as “central to our energy secure future” along with gas power, and the subsequent announcement of £250 million investment in an “ambitious” nuclear research and development programme to boost UK industry expertise - including the UK’s role in developing new technologies as part of a new competition to identify the best value small modular reactor design for the UK.

Planned sessions will bring out latest thinking on developing the advanced manufacturing supply chain and priorities for developing sector skills and growing the workforce for the sector moving forward, in addition to the regulatory framework and timescale for the development of new projects, as well as what more the UK needs to do in order to achieve its decommissioning obligations.

We are delighted to include contributions from Matthew Clarke, Deputy Director, Nuclear Generation and International, Department of Energy and Climate Change; Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive, Nuclear Industry Association and former Shadow Energy Minister; Charlie Bray, Operations Manager, National Skills Academy for Nuclear; Michael Finnerty, Deputy Chief Nuclear Inspector & Programme Director - New Reactors Programme, Office for Nuclear Regulation; Andrew Goodchild, Assistant Director - Energy Infrastructure, West Somerset Council; Tom Mundy, Managing Director, UK & Europe, NuScale Power; Nicole Robins, Senior Consultant, Oxera; Mike Tynan, Chief Executive Officer, Nuclear AMRC and Tim Yeo, Chair, New Nuclear Watch Europe and former Chair, Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.

Sue Hayman MP, Vice Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy and Angus Brendan MacNeil MP, Chair, Energy and Climate Change Select Committee have kindly agreed to chair this seminar.
