Preserving Cinema for the Future

6 April 2017 19:30-21:00, Rye, United Kingdom

Introduction
Cinema has been around since the late 1890’s entertaining people with moving pictures. Film has been used to capture historical moments such as both world wars and stories such as journey to the moon by Georges Méliès. Unfortunately historical films have been stored in poor environments which then cause these valuable pieces of history to be lost. This talk will give an insight into the science behind how film is preserved for ourselves and future generation
David Walsh is the Head of Digital Collections at the Imperial War Museum responsible for archiving old film from the battles and wars. He is also the Head of the ‘Technical Commission of the Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film’ (FIAF).
There are 25 places available on a first come first serve basis. A charge of £5.00 pp. will be made to cover the cost of the venue. The venue offers a licenced bar and snacks so please come along for a scientific view of cinema and how we preserve it.
