The Bristol & District Local Section and the Institute of Explosives Engineers will jointly be hosting a social and lecture event at Bristol University. There will be a buffet, with refreshments followed by a lecture talk. The talk entitled 'Cross-disciplinary Explosives: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine' will be given Dr Bill Proud, Director of the Institute of Shock Physics at Imperial College, London.
Booking is essential for catering purposes.
Lecture Abstract: During a detonation materials can change from a solid/liquid at room temperature into a gas, at several thousand degrees and exerting up to half-a-million atmosphere pressure, all on a sub-microsecond basis. This sudden release of energy rapidly spreads to the surrounding environment and causes ‘much confusion and change’, in the words of an early Chinese author. This talk will cover some aspects of current research in Energetic Materials and outline the wide variety of disciplines which are required to understand this class of extremely useful materials.
