Medicinal Chemistry Summer School 2022

5 - 10 June 2022, Loughborough, United Kingdom

Introduction
The Royal Society of Chemistry Medicinal Chemistry Summer School will cover topics of interest to drug discovery researchers, helping to increase understanding of the factors governing modern drug discovery from the initial concept through to translational science and intellectual property. Established since 1981, our Summer School has trained many of the world’s leading medicinal chemists working in the pharmaceutical industry and academic research institute.

Who should attend?

The school is designed for graduate and post-doctoral chemists with 1-5 years’ experience in the field of drug research. Drug discovery is an interdisciplinary subject so delegates from biological or computational backgrounds will benefit from attendance at the school.
In addition, final year PhD students from pharmaceutical or organic chemistry contemplating a career in drug discovery are also encouraged to attend.

Method and Structure

The 2022 Summer School will take place over 5 days and content is delivered by experts in the field from industry and academia. The programme includes lectures focusing on the fundamental principles of drug discovery, hands-on tutorials allowing delegates to put into practice what they have learnt and case histories from previous drug discovery projects. The programme will also include an evening lecture from a distinguished speaker.
Throughout the week course tutors and speakers will be available for informal discussion and there will be plenty of opportunities to network with the broad range of academic and industrial researchers in attendance.

Subject to change, the programme will run from 08:00 on Monday 5 June and will finish at 13:00 on Friday 10 June. An optional welcome reception will take place on Sunday evening.

Abstract Submission
Delegates registering to attend the Medicinal Chemistry Summer School are invited to present their research during the poster session which will be held on the Monday evening (6 June).

This interactive poster session will provide a chance to view the range of research interests amongst delegates as well as offering ample time to network.

Accessibility

The Royal Society of Chemistry is keen to encourage and enable as many people as possible to attend our events, to benefit from the networking opportunities and the chance to learn from leaders in the field. If you would like to discuss accessibility, please contact us to discuss your requirements so that we can enable your attendance.

Handbook of Medicinal Chemistry

The Royal Society of Chemistry is pleased to offer all registered delegates the opportunity to purchase the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Medicinal Chemistry (publishing in 2022). The Handbook is written to complement the Medicinal Chemistry Summer School tutorial content and is recommended as an ideal overview of the content of the School. Delegates can pre-order the Handbook at the discounted rate of £61.75 during the School registration process or order at the School itself.

Completely revised and updated, the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Medicinal Chemistry draws together contributions from authoritative practitioners to provide a comprehensive overview of the field as well as insight into the latest trends and research. An ideal companion for students in medicinal chemistry, drug discovery and drug development, while also communicating core principles, the book places the discipline within the context of the burgeoning platform of new modalities now available to drug discovery. The book also highlights the role chemistry has to play in wider target validation and translational technologies.
This is a carefully curated compilation of writing from global experts using their broad experience of medicinal chemistry, project leadership and drug discovery and development from an industry, academic and charity perspective to provide unparalleled insight into the field.

Bursaries

Researcher Development Grant

If you are an RSC member and a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher based at a higher education or research institution you are eligible to apply for a Researcher Development Grant.

This grant can provide up to £500 towards activities that will develop your skills and experience as a researcher, which includes participation at conferences, either in-person or virtual.

Applications are processed monthly, with the deadline for each round being the last day of the month, and decisions being sent out by the 21st of the following month. Researcher Development Grants can be applied for in addition to Grants for Carers and Assistance Grants.

Grants for carers

Grants for carers have been introduced following the Royal Society of Chemistry Breaking the barriers report where 78% of chemists working in UK academia felt that managing parenting and/or caring responsibilities has an impact on women’s retention and progression. This fund is not limited to women scientists and welcomes applications from anyone with caring responsibilities. These grants have been supported by The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemists’ Community Fund.

You can apply for up to a maximum of £1000/year to assist with additional financial costs that you incur for care usually provided by you whilst you attend a chemistry related meeting, conference or workshop or a professional development event.

Caring responsibilities are wide and varied, and so each application will be individually assessed, examples of applications that we will consider include:
  • paying for extra home help or nursing care for a dependent whilst you will not be present
  • additional medical/respite care for a dependent whilst you will not be present
  • travel expenses for a relative to travel with you to care for dependents whilst you attend a meeting or event
  • paying for extended hours with a care worker/childminder/play scheme to cover time when you will arrive home later than normal.
You are eligible to apply if:
  • you are a chemist
  • you will incur additional caring expenses whilst attending a chemistry-related meeting, conference, event or workshop or a professional development event
  • you will use these funds to cover the cost of care that you usually provide
  • you are based in the UK or Ireland or if not, you will normally have held three years RSC membership (past or current).
