Introduction
RSC Desktop Seminars in Organic Chemistry with the Brazilian Chemical Society 2020 are an initiative from the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Brazilian Chemical Society to bring cutting-edge research directly to you!

Covid-19 has exposed us to a new reality where the virtual world is much more important than before. In order to keep our students engaged at the frontiers of Organic Chemistry, we have organized a weekly webinar series that is a joint collaboration between the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Organic Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). It is an alternative way to share work and interact with potential collaborators.

The sections will alternate between Brazilian and international speakers, in some cases with the opportunity for a selected Brazilian early career researcher to engage with the audience by presenting their recent independent career developments.

Professor Rafael Luque
Benign-by-design methodologies for a more sustainable future

The design of benign and environmentally sound methodologies has been the driving force of scientists in recent years towards more sustainable methodologies. Attractive and innovative protocols that nowadays are even part of industrial ventures including biomass-derived porous carbonaceous materials, designer nanomaterials for catalytic applications and catalytic strategies for biomass/waste conversion into useful materials, chemicals and fuels have been recently developed in our group in recent years. These topics have extensively covered the preparation and design of (nano)materials, biocatalysts and photocatalysts and their utilisation in heterogeneously (bio)(photo)(electro)catalysed processes, flow chemistry as well as in biomass/waste valorisation practices [1 5]. An important research avenue from the group deals with the search for novel and alternative reaction media in Organic Synthesis including mechanochemistry, organocatalysis and photo-redox processes as well as greener catalytic processes in Organic Chemistry (flow chemistry) for the synthesis of APIs.  In this lecture, we aim to provide an overview of recent efforts from our group in leading the future of global scientists in benign-by-design methodologies for various types systems and key applications in Greener Chemical proceses including the new ?waste-to-pharma? concept.

Covalent Organic Frameworks as Nanoporous Platforms for Enzyme Immobilization.

Sustainability in chemistry heavily relies on heterogeneous catalysis and the development of efficient catalytic systems is a fundamental aspect for the straightforward production of chemicals. Particularly, enzymes are an elegant option to catalyze reactions due to their high activity and selectivity. However, issues such as low stability and poor recyclability prevent the large-scale implementation, and the immobilization of these macromolecules in solid supports is an important tool to circumvent these problems. During the last years, Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) emerged as an exciting class of organic nanoporous materials. Due to their pre-designable structure, they can be prepared with distinct physicochemical characteristics, specific pore sizes and tunable functional groups. Because of that, these materials are considered promising supports for the development of heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, in the present webinar recent achievements of our research group related to enzyme immobilization in COFs are presented.

Rafael Luque, University of Cordoba, Spain

Rafael Luque (Dpt. Quimica Organica, Universidad de Cordoba) has a significant expertise on biomass and waste valorisation practises to materials, fuels and chemicals as well as nanoscale chemistry and green engineering. Prof. Luque has published over 500 research articles (>27,000 citations, h-index 77), filed 8 patent applications and edited 10 books as well as numerous contributions to book chapters and invited, guest, keynote and plenary lectures in scientific events worldwide.
Prof. Luque is Editor in chief of Molecular Catalysis (Elsevier) and also member of the Editorial Advisory Board of prestigious International Journals (>15).

Prof. Luque was named 2018 and 2019 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics, being currently Director of the Center for Molecular Design and Synthesis of Innovative Compounds for Medicine at RUDN University (Moscow, Russia), Distinguished Chair Professor from the Chemistry Department at Xi´an Jiaotong University and more recently DFSP Distinguished Fellow of the Chemistry Department at Kind Saud University (Saudi Arabia).


Raoni Schroeder, UFRJ, Brazil

Raoni Schroeder obtained a dual degree Ph.D. in chemistry (2013) from Paris-Sud University and from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) under the supervision of Prof. Daniele Bonnet-Delpon, Prof. Marcus V.N. de Souza and Prof. Carlos R. Kaiser. In 2013, he joined the group of Prof. Pierre Mothé Esteves as a postdoctoral fellow to work on the development of heterogeneous catalysts based on Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs). After a year as a researcher in process chemistry in the pharmochemical industry, Nortec Química S.A. (2014-2015), in 2016 he was appointed as assistant professor at the UFRJ. During 2018, he carried out a postdoctoral research in the research center of Bayer Crop Science, in Lyon, under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Webster, working on the development of new methodologies for the synthesis of fluorinated molecules. He is currently the leader of the Laboratory of Synthesis and Catalysis (LACASO) at the UFRJ where he conducts researches on the development of new heterogeneous catalysts, COFs and fluorinated molecules.
